20w50 castrol gtx

my mains were on the big end of the tolorance .002, but the rods were clearanced at .0015 and i should have taken into concideration that the rod bearings play a bigger roll in the abuse game than the mains. Should have never based my oil choice on the mains.

overall, i should have spec'd the rod bearing clearances to be larger anyways, so i haven't decided if i'm gonna go +.0005 on all the rods or just run thinner oil.

I'll be taking some measurements tonight with the bearings that i have in stock and see where that leads, I'm leaning twords a .002 - .0025 clearance on the rods & running 10w30 oil.

I spent some time under the car tonight.

After i finished polishing up the number 4 journal, i checked it for roundness with a digital caliper. I've got .0004 of variance there. It's well within honda's specs, so i continued.

Installed a Sealed Power bearing (std), Plasti-gauged, came up with .002 (i was excited to see that)

Image

Moved onto the number 1 cyl to take a look at the rod bearing and the resultz (pix of these things look worse than they are for some reason):

Image

Onto Cyl 2:

Image

Onto Cyl 3 (noted with the tag so i wouldn't forget which was which when i got back to the computer!):

Image

Finally the spec's after i plasti-gauged each of the rod bearings:

Image

Honda's min is .0015

I think i'd like to run something a little looser so im probably gonna look into another set of ACL Race Bearings (std -.0005)

i'd have to look over your engine bay to figure that out & probably take a few measurements.

u wanna go single or twin?

yea i'm definatly up for fabbin up a v-8 turbo setup. I think it would be a pretty cool! Once you get your stuff all placed where it's gonna be and you make some room in there, lemme know and i'll take a look at it.

well i threw the car back together tonight & took it for a drive in this shitty rain!

It felt tight upon first start but seems to have loosened up a little bit. I really think that there is something wrong with my oil pressure gauge or the sending unit because on idle, the needle never moved, yet the idiot light never came on. It only showed 25psi of oil pressure durring 3000rpm of load and didn't really go much higher than that.

I'll swap out the sending unit tomarrow and see what it reads upon cold start. Then i'll probably pull the whole thing back apart to check the bearings. I'm hoping everything is ok coz i really wanna drive it to superfly on sunday.

ehh regardless, it's a ticking time bomb at the moment. I'm gathering parts for a bottom end rebuild. (bearings, rings, gettin my other eagle crank cleaned up)

when a bearing goes in a motor, theres no way to get rid of all the shavings other than take the entire thing apart & clean all the peices individually, and blow out the oil gally's in the block.

Sure your oil pumps not on its way out? How is the pump driven on your motor?

oil pump is fine. I took it apart & checked it out. The idiot light never even flickers. we'll what happens soon enough.

Bearing clearances are really important when tryin to make big power. Walkin a fine line coz stock clearances aren't acceptable in this motor and nobody really states whats to big & whats to small, but i think i've got it all figured out now.. just need to gather everything up and deal with a couple weeks of downtime while i get it all setup again.

----- next chapter -----

i guess this is the next chapter of the book here. My clutch is shot! That thing was slippin like crazy tryin to get down the track yesterday! This one only lasted 2 thousand miles!!!! wow, what a turd! I'm going back to my ACT HDXX pressure plate!

I just called NEAS for a price on a new 6 puck act disk and they quoted me about 125 and told me that they could have it in their hands tomarrow! So i told glen to order that thing in. Theres nothing like next day service! When i looked at summit's site, it said that they couldn't ship it for like 20 days! To hell with them, i'm on a mission to get this thing running decent for Super Nats and summit wasn't gonna get me there but the local guy was!

Anyways, i guess i'll toss up some pix of the craped out clutch when i get it out.

I'll probably be changing my flywheel too while i'm in there, i bet that thing is near the end of it's life, with 3 abusive clutches gone through this car, i can't imagine much friction zone being left on there!

Sweet shit man. I meant to ask you how's the transmission holding up?

I can't wait too see this thing make some 10 second timeslips in a couple weeks!

ok well i decided to start my clutch job tonight. I knew i couldn't finish the job coz i had no helpers around tonight lift the tranny back into the car but i had the thing droped on the ground in 50min on my own without pulling the motor so i guess it wasn't that bad. My record time is 35 with one helper.

Anyways, here's what was left of the clutch disk.
