car idles for 10 minutes and shuts off

Postby mtkhalid » Mon Jan 07, 2008 7:43 pm

my sister has a 94 Toyota Camry. driving back from work it randomly stopped so she pulled over since that day it has been at the workshop and the mechanic first said it was the fuel pump so got a new one, then a new fuel filter, now we have also changed the distributor and still no luck.

the car does start but after 10 minutes it shuts off and looses all electrical power. not even the headlights turn on. checked the battery and it seems to be fine.

any and all help is appreciated.
thanks in advance.

lol they just raped you, a fuel pump would never cause that to happen! It would have been just the pump itself not working instead of the whole car.... its most likely the alternator.

it def wasn't the fuel pump... those generally make funny noises long before dying. not to mention if it was the fuel pump she would have noticed problems with the cars performance previous to this happening.

Its probably not the alternator either though, if the alternator isn't providing enough charge the car is wired to take the needed juice from the battery... interior lights ect would start dimming way before the car stopped running; not to mention the car wouldn't start after dying cause the battery would be nuked.

Distributor was a good possibility, how long has it been since the car has had the wires changed? I can't really think of much off the top of my head that would cause the car to randomly die once started... especially if its not nuking the battery. I'm pretty clueless!

reason for changing the fuel pump was cuz there was no fuel being sent to the motor. so that needed changed either way. just had a new alternator put in it about a month ago. wires and plugs have never been changed.
i don't know what else it could possibly be.

ready to junk the damn thing. too bad its not mine.

ehh will when my alternator died on my 240, it took it all, the battery was so low it wouldn't even power my dome light....

If its not the alt, its something electrical, check all your main fuses for your car under your hood...

it is more then likely the ignitoin control module. i dont know alot about toyta... but i have had 2 go bad in chevys and the symptoms are the same. i would drive... and everything would shut down. let it sit ten minutes... and i was fine. replaced the ignition control module. its 30 bucks.
ill snap your neck

you check for all loose grounds? Make sure the block is grounded the chassis and as well as the battery? A loose/rusted ground can cause havoc.
