O Shit!

Postby 92tegGP » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:30 am

Well the weekend started out magnificant, tied up all the loose ends on my car friday and saturday. It was running so good, idled perfect ran amazing pulled hard.. I called eric and he came over to go for a ride in it.

We turned onto a backroad and i gave him a taste of it and it pulled awesome.. it was running magnificant. After about another 5 minutes of driving we came to a stop sign and made a right.

I sort of got into it shifting at about 6k and as soon as i shifted into 3rd something snapped. Got towed home and tore into it sunday. In about 4 hours i had the motor out and down to bare block and this is what i found. ENJOY!

That sucks!

Was the tune safe or was it just making a bunch of power?....ususally they seem to hold together pretty well.

If you decide to 'fuck it' I'll take that minty shell off your hands

Seriously tho, I hope you can get it sorted.
It whistles while it WORKS.

Well i was rolling with the base tune that comes with the V3 DSMLINK, because i cant get my damn computer to connect to my car for some odd reason. It seems like it was an alright tune though, nothing that would cause something like that. As far as power i read numerous places that stock rods can handle 400-500 hp and im not anywhere in that range i dont think... And ARP rod bolt completly snapped in half...

I have no clue... all i know is damn this sucks now i gotta wait till i get paid on april 10th to even do anything...

On a side note do you got any shortblocks laying around?

this information is based off of what?

your wideband to moniter AFR & EGT to read the cylinder temps & knock sensor or plug colors to detect knock?

or just a wild guess because it seemed to drive alright? ;)

probably a little late now! In order to read them a pull needs to be ended early, conditions change so rapidly that the plugs would look different now.

Not if all the ceramic has been blown off or the electrodes themselves in worst case. Or if they have little goose bumps on them which is a sign of pre-det/lean condition.

Also pull the turbine housing off and inspect the turbine fins itself....

haha well obviously if shit is melted then it's a pretty good sign that it was running extreamly hot.

I'm willing to bet that it was an ignition timing problem that caused extream downward force to the rod before it reached the peak of it's rotation, causing extream stress, bending and ultimatly the explosion.

take pictures of each of the bearing surfaces on the crankshaft as well & the bearings.

Well i dont know if things are technically "melted"... i was doing about 70mph when this happened, shifted into 3rd.. then i heard the rod go, stopping the crank, and in turn it locked up my motor which would account for the complete misshapen rod.. The piston just shattered which didnt damage my valves or anything which completly suprised me..

The rod shot out the bottom of my oil pan and made a nice dent in the top of my transfer case.. Arp Rod bolts, one snapped in half and one bent at about a 45 degree angle..

all 3 other cylinders were still good.. which is also strange..

i dont know ill have to look it up real fast, they were oem rods/ pistons

Check the upper portion of the intake sides of your pistons above the rings, do they look brand new or melted?

the fact that i had a rod bolt snapped completly in half leads me to think maybe the rod bolt failed... the nut an everything was still in place on the broken portion of the stud

He wont get shit but fucked, trust me. There are to many variables that got into failures such as this for anyone to take 100% the blame.

Well i got an arisonal of parts in my garage so i just gotta get some things machined and what not. Got another block i gotta get to the machine shop to get resurfaced and honed and what not... got a crank that i gotta get turned.. gotta few extra sets of rods... so it basically just a time setback :shithappens:
