my guess is a redline 8 grand 2nd gear shift into 1st..... Only way I see it coming apart like that.......

Yeah but whose to say what he was doing....

The tranny didn't just blow up, the flywheel and clutch assembly broke off. Its possible the bolts to the crank were loose and not torqued properly and he over reved hard, do to that the mass would have had to accelerated under an extreme high rate.

For anyone who has ever held an RB flywheel it is fucking thick and heavy.

Dudes legs coulda been chopped off if that dibris had went up into the cabin...

building and working with 3000 hp rigs.... shattered flywheels are DANGEROUS. sfi specs on scatter sheilds is minimum 1/4 thick steel. I could help you if youd like- I have an entire fabrication shop to my expence. second the loose bolt theory is the most beleivable. The flywheel is built to withstand extermely high amounts of rotational force. an unbalanced flywheel- from the burnt disc rediculous burnouts are probably the culprite- will throw off the center of rotation and cracks will form, resulting in it blowing apart.....

Most flywheel explosions can be tracked down to one thing...

"Lightening"

Alot of people "back in the day" (late 90's, early 2000-ish) used to take alot of weight out of stock flywheels as an alternative to the expensive aftermarket flywheels.

Problem with that, is they would use an old 100k flywheel with tons of heat cycles and never magna-flux or check for cracks. Then they'd try to spin it to 9500rpm and wonder why the thing flew apart and nearly killed the driver.

I've also seen Fidzanza flywheels basically tear apart right at where they mount to the crank at. Variety of reasons for this, but mainly it's the wrong metal choice.

You also should ALWAYS use a metal spacer plate between bolt heads and your aluminum flywheel. The bolt heads will otherwise dig into the flywheel surface and cause inaccurate torque readings and/or slowly loosening over time and such a disaster can happen.

I recommend steel flywheels, and having them balanced by a 3rd party just to be sure. Not uncommon to see Fidanza flywheels up to 6grams out of balance...imaging 6 grams at 9k, lol.

Only problem is from that picture it appears to be a stock RB flywheel. I just buttoned my down the other day, I insured to locktite them all, and apply the proper torque. :thumbsup:

rb... thats a good measure. and for the 'lightening.. thats oldschool stuff nowadays. i havent heard of anyone cutin down their flywheel anymore. now you have moly and bi-metal wheels you dont need to. balancing by a third party isnt a bad idea, so long as the balencing rig has been certified and tagged yearly you shouldnt have a problem. another thing is fidanza has many copiers... along with so many other manufactures. as to the flywheel being off balance.... well the owner understanding its a fadanza doesnt neccearily mean it was in fact one. I built a supercharged 350Z for vortech and was pushing 800hp at a redline of 8. and hasent had a problem almost 2 years later. It all comes down to how a machine is used. You can have a p.o.s babied for years... or a quarter million dollar car last for 10 seconds. it its abused itll break, if its respected- itll last. One thing to always remember for ALL you guys, costomizing and builing your car- built it to suit your needs. you always need to remember that when you make horsepower- you risk loosing reliability and dependibility. You want a daily driver with a buttload of ponies- you need to tear it all apart and replace it all with parts that can withstand the abuse. some may say its overkill, but my experiance with high horsepower engines and high abuse race cars, i have seen too many 60K$ machines incorectly built , blow up, and brought to me to get fixed- and they say " i payed that guy x$, he doesnt know what hes doing..... can you fix it?" of course i will, but the case being stated, its not that that guy didnt know.... it was the parts put in and the forsight assembling it all being put into their car. Do it once, and do it right.
