Mazdaspeed3 and WRX

Postby Ubryaj » Fri Jan 18, 2008 8:53 pm

So today I had some time to test drive a few cars. I'm trying to find a car that is close to the Miata in the fun factor but it needs to be a good daily driver also.
First, I stopped by the Subaru dealer and drove the only WRX they had which was a base model sedan (I don't like the looks, hatch is better). Interior is better than the previous generation, but it just felt plain and economy car like, 3 still beats it here. On the drive, the steering didn't feel as precise as the 3, it did feel decently weighted though. Honestly, I could hardly hear the engine or exhaust which ruined the experience for me. I'm not sure, but I could swear a heard a few interior rattles while on the test drive. Honestly, I was let down. It just felt like a base Impreza with a turbo engine. Not appealing.
Next, I went and drove a Mazdaspeed3. My sister just bought an 08 Mazda 3 S and I have been driving it every once in awhile. Great car for the price but her car is auto. The roads were still a little icy so I didn't get to fully drive it, but the power was perfect. The engine sound was nice and the transmission was the same great one in my Miata. Only minus is no sunroof, which isn't a huge deal. Steering felt great around some back roads. I did not notice too much torque steer which amazed me. They come with an LSD but I was worried it would be too much HP for being FWD. Honestly, I loved everything about this car. I never thought I'd own a car that wasn't RWD or AWD. This car would make a good combination with my Miata, I think. I know there are the few upgrades for the 2008.5 model so I may just order one, or try to get a good price on the 2007 they have left over or one of their 08s. I think I'm still going to test drive the BMW 128i when it comes out in March. 230 hp, RWD, and over 30k vs. 263 hp, FWD, low 20s. :?

I'd say neither. For $30k you're just paying for the BMW badge. Plus a 1 series is the smallest Beemer you can possibly get. You would just be buying one of those just so you can say you own a new BMW. The new Mazdas don't do anything for me.

I'll try to look for a new 07 WRX but it is probably impossible at this point Dave. I just wish the 08 wasn't so bland. I actually don't mind the looks of the 5 door. I do realize that most people would think that anyone buying a 128i would be doing it for the badge. But honestly, I just enjoy BMW's and there aren't many appealing, inexpensive, RWD coupes. I could also get a fairly good price and never have to pay for an oil change or anything which would all be done while I'm at work. The 135i is incredible but I should just wait a few years to get a car like that. I should just be more sensible and look at cars in the 15-20k range like the Honda Fit Sport and enjoy great gas mileage. But what kinda of enthusiast would I be. I heard the Fit is pretty fun to drive though. I guess I'll find out about insurance costs this week and maybe make an offer on the Cosmic Blue Speed 3.

Yah you can probably pick up a pretty nice something for what you are going to spend for a new car.

I really like the new Accord Coupe but just not for me. Believe me, I am still looking on Autotrader for a few used cars. I'm really in no rush to buy. I have three cars right now and at least one has to go (my 96' Miata). But I'm waiting until spring to put it up for sale. If I tried to trade it I would get screwed. The Mazdaspeed3 is still at the top of my list. I know that Don Allen in Pittsburgh is going out of business so I thought I could get a good deal on one since I know the salesman that my sister bought her car from. The BMW dealer called me yesterday about placing an order but I think I'd want to drive one first anyway. I really should be worrying about school rather than cars, or so my parents tell me.

The Lancer Ralliart looks nice....but no real manual from what I have read. Haha, when my mom was looking at cars we test drove an Outlander with those paddle shifters. Didn't buy one, but they're nice small SUV's. That commercial is dumb though.
