Water-cooled…how important?

Postby acvmotorsports » Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:46 pm

Current Turbo is a GT30R, water-cooled of course since the Subaru motor is already set up for it.

Looking to upgrade to a new turbo and I realize there are a few options that are not water cooled.

At first this did not really bother me, but now I am wondering if I am downgrading if I don’t stick with a water-cooled turbo.

I assume given the same turbo, horsepower performance isn’t effected, but what else am I not considering?

Tried finding some links for helpful comparison and I thought I would ask your guys opinions.

So in my mind the greatest advantage is the ability to avoid coking the oil, so if I am careful with the shutdown process will I be fine without water-cooling?

Any advantage/disadvantage to either….

Opinions!

Water cooled turbos are only DBB, the center section in a DBB differs from that of a journal. Journal bearings only need to be be oil cooled. Same size turbo DBB to Journal, DBB has a ~200 rpm spool advantage and about a 3-400% greater rebuild cost. Also it has a 20-50% increase in price depending on the size.

Deleting the water paths isn't hard, and there are many ways in which you can do it.
