13.5 @ 105 wtf?

Postby Markdawg20 » Sun Jun 07, 2009 4:13 pm

I had my first drag racing experience today in my turbo 240. I had a best of 13.5 @ 105 holding 9lbs. All my runs(about 12 of them) had TERRIBLE launches.
My 60' time was 2.3 on the best run(tut). I am admittedly not the best driver, but that coupled with 18inch street tires, and an on/off button clutch resulted in shitty launches all day. It was my first time ever racing so I'll have to give it some practice.

There is no doubt in my mind that with a set of good drag radials, 13+lbs of boost and a 3 inch exhaust that this thing will go high 12's trapping 110+ mph.

170k stock block
T3 Super 60 at 9lbs
18 inch banana peel street tires of some sort

We shall see...

Yeah man it's hard to learn how to launch it right. I'm always either giving it too much gas and slipping the clutch too fast and smoking off the line, or not giving it enough and/or slipping to fast/slow and bogging the engine horribly taking me out of boost. I'll practice and get it down.

Good 1/8th mile, mine was 8.8 on the 13.5 run.

I melted my brake master cylinder during my passes today, haha. I really need to get some heat shielding around the turbo.

How much does it usually cost to run down the strip?

I think I might go during the weekdays since that's when most people are at work, meaning less people there.

Nice mph Mark. Your sounds almosy idenitcally fast as my BPU rb25.I trapped right around 107-108 with streets, and 104-106 with DR's. I had the same issues with traction. Head back to the track with DR's and you will have better luck. Not sure what suspension you are running, but I had megans on mine, made weight transfer next to impossible. Best I could manage was a 1.85 60ft at quaker. Too bad you werent 5 lug Ive got a spare set of mustang wheels with almost spend DR's on them that could give you a few more times to the track.

Our 240's nice and light ass end makes hooking up difficult w/o a nice compound tire. I'll be back in the states next week, if you head back up to the track let me know.

That 13.5 is very respectable for that car & your first time on the drag strip! I'd be proud if i were you.

There is definatly more in that car as you said. It's just gonna take a little work to get it there but with some decent driving, you could have 12's with a 108 trap on quakers track, i know this coz i've done it! ;)

a set of sticky tires on the back of that thing will make a world of a difference.

I'm not sure how much it cost's on regular days, yesterday it was a track rental day so it was all you can race for $35.

What was your 1/4 time with DR's mounted? I figured trapping 105+ should warrant a high 12 if I could get out of the hole hard?
Yeah, pm me your number or something and I'll let you know when I'm going next time, it will probably be in a couple weeks for the steel valley nationals.
I don't get my first decent paycheck until the end of the month so unfortunately I'll still be on a 2.5 inch exhaust, with 18 inch street tires though  . Oh well.

i was on 2.5 crush-bent exhaust until this year, i finally built my 3inch mandrel bent setup.

You can pump 300+ whp through a 2.5inch with an inline 4 easily! ;) just food for thought.

Nice time/mph Mark!

That thing should scream with a few more tweaks. FWIW my butt-dyno guess on that thing was like dead accurate with et and mph

I plan to be slow this year.

the launch can make all the differnce. Ive seen GT500's run 14's bogging off the line and others running 12's with a good launch on street tires. My launch is whats killing me. I managed my first 1.9 60ft sunday hitting the nitrous at 2400rpm off the line which is pushing it. But mines an auto, so theres nothing more I can do without a 3000+ stall converter. Go to a parking lot and practice

well mark our cars make somewhere around the same power, so maybe what i learned with my car experimenting over the last two weeks might be able to help ya a bit (my passes are with dr's tho). I tried dropping at 5-5.5k, just bogged the motor too hard. Tried launching around 3.5k, slow release or drop, bogged both ways. Best launching i found is to leave right around 4.5-5k let it out pretty quick but don't straight drop it. I need some more time to play around with launching it, im pretty sure i can get into the 1.7s. Hope that helps for when u go again with some dr's, will give ya something to start with atleast

either way we just need about another 100hp so u can just eliminate the whole bogging thing and let it fly

We need LS1s Brian!

Tony suggested that I lower my tire pressure and I'll do that next time for sure, I'm at like 29lbs or something like that right now.

...or just get a cool lS1 swap and slick it

Made some better passes at super nats. Exact same shit just a little better driving on street tires.

Fastest 1/4 mile run:
60' - 2.157
1/4 - 13.258
MPH - 107.84

Fastest MPH run:
60' - 2.287
1/4 - 13.426
MPH - 108.41

I actually managed a 2.0XX 60' time one some other passes so I probably could have made a 13.1 pass but my turbo mounting studs were failing me by the end of the day so I had some pretty bad exhaust leakage pre turbo.

All I can say is I can't be more pleased with how a 170k engine can handle every lb of boost I toss down it's throttle body like a slut. I'm tossing around the idea of a mid summer "re"build with a tubular manifold, real time tuneable ecu, a better turbo, and 15psi. I recon I'm making around 270-280whp based on traps, but I'm really looking for 300whp.

good job on the slips there. 12's are just around the corner with some tires! I'm sure you could pull a 1.8 or 1.7 60ft easily with that car if u had something sticky on the back.

Which would pull bout a half second off your ET.
