My new project

Postby Slick Nick » Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:09 am

So I decided to make the jump from a street/strip build, to a full blown drag car. I just bought this ride yesterday, and I am going to pick it up this Friday:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Oldsmobile-442-1972-full-chassis-drag-car_W0QQitemZ330351416409QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRace_Cars_Not_Street_Legal_?hash=item4cea7a9459&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

My plan as of right now is to take this 455 shortblock I had sitting around my garage as a spare, and get this TH400 trans I have sitting around to be rebuilt by Rossler and put them in this car. And I am going to take my edelbrock heads off of my Oldsmobile now, get those suckers ported and polished, replace the valves and the springs.

My goal is to be running mid to low 9's by the beginning of racing season next year, with the build that I outlined above N/A. I still have a lot to figure out and a lot of work to do, because as you can see this car is just a chassis. Some of you might think and will probably say that I am just full of shit when I say mid to low 9's; BUT my current setup runs 11.60's, and with this car I going to have a similar engine combo except a more aggressive cam, bigger intake & carb, and the trans will have a trans brake with a high stall converter and bigger gears. Also, this car will probably weigh about a solid 1000 lbs less that my car right now that runs 11.60's.

I will post pics this weekend once I get it in the garage.
Err please stop fueling my silent rage..

Sorry I could just never build a car to only be run at a strip.

Looks like a fun project tho.

Yeah well that is actually going to be easy to change. All I will have to do when that time comes is get a pair of DOT slicks or drag radials, yes they do make them that big, bolt up a short tube exhaust with a couple race mufflers and boom... street legal. Because all of the lights are going to be wired up, cooling shouldn't be an issue because I am going to be running electric waterpump with a big aluminum radiator with dual electric fans. Motor will have an alternator and two batteries so keeping a charge should be no problem.

The car even has a clear title, so no BS getting plates if I wanted to. Wouldnt want to take it on a road trip or anyting lol, but more than adequate to drive to the track or car show.

How about track the car on DR's or DOT slicks? That way you can run your "9" and say its street legal. mmhmm.

Just some food for thought. Also would keep you from having to own 2 sets of expensive tires. If 6 speed supras can run 8's on DR's an IRS solid axle big motor car should have no issues.... Granted you have the driver mod. ;)
