My g/f's brother in-law just bought a 1990 Mustang GT 5.0 106,000 rust free just has really faded red-pink paint. Anyway hes looking to gain a few extra hp out of it. Whats the best bang for the buck mods while keeping it cheap an reliable. It already has headers and full exhaust.

I'm sure Hank could chime in on this... sorry to say but even with basic bolt ons the car will still be a relative dog...

your gonna have to tear into the motor a bit to get any hp out of it really....

afr claims 100 flywheel hp gain on upgrading the stock heads to the 1850cc model, throw in a cam upgrade and u may be able to pick up another 50hp. Other than that your gonna have to rip into the bottom end.

heads and cam will run u about 2grand or so, and you'll be lucky to push 300 to the wheels... anything pre-1999 makes no power on stock parts

Tell him to join http://www.corral.net and start reading the 5.0 forum.

Tell him to start digging around junkyards for Lincoln Navigator's and Ford Explorer's that had the 5.0. They had the same intake manifold's as the 5.0 in the Mustang Cobra.

www.mustang50magazine.com also has lots of good articles.

Foxes don't run toooooo bad so I wouldn't give them that much shit.

I'd look into the basic boltons of exhaust and gears. The car will be pretty fun to drive without getting in over your head.

My brothers with a timing adavance and shortys/hpipe was running faster than my LT1 and he still had junk 2:73s (he was trapping @98mph like that)

I'd do that + slicks and nitrous and just have fun.

H/C/I will put you right at or a little over 300rwhp depending on the combo or where you dyno at. There's always someone faster no matter what. I'd look into a power adder if he wants to get serious....single turbo kits are getting relatively inexpensive for these and people are netting upwards of 400whp on stock everything.

A bonus is you can work on them without going insane (insert fbody jokes here  )

The old navigators ALWAYS had cammer mod motors in them, never push rod 5.0 just DOHC 4.6 and 5.4s. The Explorer did have a 5.0 PR mill in them but the intake is a tall version of what the 89-95 GT/Cobra came with. Yea yea Cobra started in 93. That intake however is no where near the flow numbers of the cobra, it will build better low end tq though.

The explorer LOWER is the same as a GT40 FYI.

No one uses the upper from them.
