Yet another n00b from Y town

Hey all, the name is Nick i live in youngstown, ive been hangin around on here for a little while but never posted any info on me or my rides. I go out to Quaker regularly, every week if I can, and when my supra is out of the shop I cruise around youngstown and boardman in that.

Daily driver is a 2001 Eclipse GT, a fun car to drive for the most part and easy to get speeding tickets in. Have done some work it but nothing major. will run 15.0-15.3 at the track. its in kinda bad shape right now but here are some pics when I had time to work on it a lot

Car show/Drag car - 1970 Olds 442. Ive put a lot of money into this car over the years, really started working on it when I was 15 and have been racing it for, hmmm.... about 5 years or so. will run 11.6-11.9 pretty consistently depending on Quaker's track conditions (and we all know how that goes!).

Image

Project Car - 1989 Toyota Supra, bought this car from a friend of mine for cheap, currently entirely stock NA, car is extremely clean which was main reason I bought it. I have a 2JZ-GE-T swap in the works, I already have the engine and tranny; but I still need to pick up: turbo kit, standalone ems, LSD, coilovers, wheels.

You say these cars "will" run or have they run?

Interesting project with the supra. Which trans are you using the R154 or v160? So the engine is a factory GTE? If so why not just run factory twins? Its not like a BPU setup is close to slow... Just a thought, that would save you some $$ and also could keep the factory ECU.

I love how you say you just have to "pick up" a few more items lol, those are big $$$ items there son. Is this a project with a deadline? or when it gets done it gets done?

The two cars that I gave times for have run in that range of times. ive ran the eclipse on 3 or 4 different days, the 442 I run almost every week at the track and it fluctuates from 11.6 to 11.9 depending on weather and Quaker track prep.

Im running the R154 trans, i was considering just keeping the stock W58 but from what I have found the dont last past 400hp. The engine that I bought with is a factor GE. So i have to buy a turbo kit for it. I decided to go this route for two reasons, one was money and the other were power goals.

As far as money goes - to find a decent stock GTE i would have to spend at least 2500, and that is a deal would prob be more like 3000+ just for the engine.... I picked up this GE with the R154 and a bunch of misc parts for 1000. A turbo kit that is good up to 600hp for the GE costs me about 1600. So it made more sense for me to go this route, plus i wouldnt have to come up with all of it right away, im saving up for the kit right now.

I talked to a few different shops and when talking about the 2JZ, almost all of them told me that for serious power a lot of guys with the GTE end up going to a single turbo. So wouldnt really have been worth it for me to go the GTE route for the twins just to change them out later. THis way I can rebuild that GE, and get a brand new turbo kit for a reasonable price.

I have what i need to run the stock ECU, but I wanted to go standalone for tuning purposes for if/when im making serious power.
......

Trust me man, I know how much this is going to run me. Im budgeting 10,000 to get the rest of it done which should be very doable. At the very latest, I want to have the car together by next spring, ambitiously I would like to get it on the road with the new engine by the end of summer, maybe without coilovers, new wheels, and other stuff not necessary to get it to run. My original plan was to drive it around this summer and then do the swap in the winter, but I was recently t-boned and so it is in the body shop... who knows how long it is going to take, it needs some body work on the quarter panel and a new door and fender. So things are kind of uncertain at this point.

Thanks for clearing a few of those questions up. Nice times with your eclipse thats not bad at all.

As for the engine reasons I was saying price you said GTE in your first post, so i figured since you got a factory twins motor you might have picked up a v160 as well, as Im sure you know a decent combo like that is around 6k+ with uncut harness and ECU... 10k is a good budget and definitally do able. Since your engine doesnt come stock with twins I wouldnt waste my time on this either. Good call there.

Best of luck on it and if you dont mind keeping us updated on progress. I6's are my fave.

Have you considered a 1JZ?

Cory, the 7m GTE is setup for a single CT26 turbo. Only the 1JZ cars had twins in 92. The 7M GE I believe is the standard n/a motor.

I had a pretty built 87 7m car that was absolutely badass. It's the one car I wish I didn't sell like every day. If you go the 7m route, make sure you run a metal headgasket and ARPs. Also the stock turbos are known to be on the lacking side of things if that is the route you are taking.

Just make sure you lose that wing while it's in the bodyshop

Tom I know this, He said 2JZ, not 7m. I'm refereing to the 2JZGTE which came with factory twins...

His car is currently an NA 7m. But he has a 2JZGE non turbo engine to swap in it, that he plans to turbo.

Yeah Ill let you guys know how this project progresses, once i get the car back from the shop and get some wrench time in on it I will probably start a build thread on the Supra.

Should be interesting though since ive never done a swap like this, but i have a pretty good idea of what i need to do and how to do it.

And I thought about doing the 1JZ, but after researching the different options available, i was leaning toward the 2JZ for money reasons and ease of swap. Then i came across this awesome deal and it kind of made up my mind for me. I was gonna just get a turbo 7m and call it a day, but it seemed like a lot of people were having trouble with that build, idk how much of it was people being morons and how much was legitimate. But compared to the 7m, the 2JZ is a newer platform with more parts available and aftermarket support it seems.
