Ha nice. Why's he putting a fart can on that thing? He needs an electronic cutout!

it looks very similar to stock muffler just one exhaust tip instead of 2, and its stainless, it looks sexy on the car, i think dave has a few pics

no, suggesting stock exhaust provides shitty flow, and a cut out for street use is loud as fawk.. trust me.. i tried.

Idk how 'tardish' you can be just using a cutout.....

I will say inspecting both the summit brand and the QTP; the summit one IS ABSOLUTE GARBAGE, and opens super easy with your hand. The QTP seems to have a decent stepper and is rock solid when closed. Prolly more of the usual case in being cheap = buying twice.

That said, I'm about sick of fart cannons myself. Esp on the getting pulled over/hassle from the world end of things. EVERYONE fucks with 'ricers' doesnt matter what you are driving. I've been revved at by midde age people in a minivan for having a canister exhaust. Everyone assumes its some ricer POS as 90% of cars with them are.

I'm going with something stock looking or a dump style next round.
It whistles while it WORKS.

Thats what this is for... http://www.spracingonline.com/store/SP_Exhaust_Cutout__Boost_Activated___3_inch/3673

Results in quite exhaust until 5-7psi is achieved, then acts like an open wastegate basically. They have made 30-40 HP gains just from this mod on an RB 240. (was making a touch over 500 wheel if I remember correctly)

These mods are pointless IMO if your under ~500ish horsepower when a 3 inch exhaust can serve just fine, and still be relatively quite.

Whats the point of that? Just run an open wastegate...

... nooo its the same thing as a cutout, just it opens with boost pressure, not when you tell it to. Therefore its quite when your driving normal, load + more power under WOT.

They sell them in 3" and 4" kits, wastegate dumps are generally ~1-1.5" dia.

that would be slick if it was reliable. the main problems i hear with these automatic type of cutouts are that either the electric motor wears out from the heat, or they dont close properly and leak.

that design seems better because it looks like its all mechanical. do you know how it works? is there like a diaphragm the boost pressure pushes on with like a return spring or something?

does people with na cars no good though. unless they have a design where engine vacuum holds it shut and when you lose vacuum it opens, probably still wouldnt work because most high performance na cars have big cams and dont make much vacuum anyway.

honestly i have the type of cutouts that you have to unbolt with three bolts and a gasket and plate come off. and they work fine for me. they are like 30 bucks and will never break or wear out.

besides running an open exhaust is illegal just like taking the catalytic converters off of your car. and everyone knows that anything illegal is just gay to use on the street, while youre street racing illegally.

isnt that the same as a wastegate dump? Wastegate opens at the set psi and dumps exhaust

No a wastegate dump is bypassing exhaust gases before it hits the turbo through the manifold thus regulating a constant pressure. This dump tube like I said is generally only ~1-1.5” in diameter. (you will see a small gain in open dump versus closed generally depending on the exhaust its plumbed back into) This cutout is bypassing exhaust flow after the downpipe (thus after the turbo) straight into the atmosphere as if you didn’t even have an exhaust hooked up to the car. Major difference in the two, the cutout is releasing back pressure from the system allowing the turbo to spin more freely/efficiently thus providing additional horsepower gains, more noticeable on a car that’s making 400 + hp.

The cutouts I have list above us a simple internal wastegate diaphragm and rod to open and close the cutout. It works just like an internal wastegate, when pressure gets too high in the diaphragm the spring tension inside collapses moving the rod and opens the cutout.

Bill your right about doing no good from n/a motor, however if you are running a decent programmable ECU with AUX outs/inputs you can wire it up so that at a certain rpm/TPS/pressure value the electronic solenoids see power input thus opening the dumps. That way you can run it so when you’re not in high rpm or under high load they will be shut. Since your running an old school carb.. well that leaves you with limited options. Most likely your best is to just remove your dump plates like you do, or just leave your full exhaust intact at all times.

what i meant by being a tard with the electric ones is using it excessively when the car is hot, or doing it under load.. shit like that.

Chances are those electric ones werent meant for that abuse and wearout/break quickly and therefor people saying they are garbage. Like if i had them i would use them rarely and not while revving the fuck out of my engine. idk, i thnk people might abuse them and thats why the get a bad rap, but i cant say for sure because i never used them.. i have little faith in people in general though so take it for what its worth.

I'm with Tom on the fart can... my subie owns one sorta, but too cheap to change it. 240's rocking a Bill Jones straight pipe now which looks better IMO, but is a touch louder... not that it runs or is even close to running anyways lol.

Old people are generally the only "revers" I've noticed.. revers are faggots anyways. :o

i dont' think anyone got my point..

using a cutout or open exhaust on the street is just to damn loud. All it's gonna do is draw negitive attention.

I understood just fine. So does acclerating a fast car... I suppose you could make it whisper quite but that still doesnt remove the possible spinning of tires, and car thats hauling ass..... Open downpipe/cutout is gay I agree for just normal driving, but if its only opening up under WOT well then... read my first sentence.

even using a solenoid would still go back to the electronic element which i would want to stay away from. but it would still work, i mean solenoids on starters work fine for a long time and those are often times right next to a heat source.

and btw my old school carb setup still has a wot switch that would activate something like that quite nicely lol, it does a damn good job turning on those little solenoids next to my carb! haha it even has two outputs!! hopefully after winter i wont have this carb setup anymore anyway...

i agree that open header/open downpipe on the street is stupid for the most part. unless you drive a bitch ass ls1 that isnt even loud lol, then you can get away with it easy!!!

I talked to QTP when i bought mine last year because i heard about the possibility of the failing solinoids and they confirmed that it was rebuildable, and that they have all the parts if i were to have a problem.

I went with the convenience factor of not having to crawl under the car.

(i just think it's to loud to have open unless i'm at the track)

besides, i have an un-restricted 3-inch exhaust all mandrel bent from the turbo back, it flows fine without being open up front.
