Turbo Lt1 motor

Thinking about turbo charging my firebird.... looking to get into the low 11's and yet tune the boost down and have driveability when i want it. Any suggestions? i've never messed with turbo's before but they can't be that hard to figure out.

lol i work at summit right now, so getting parts for the motor isn't a problem. I figure i can rebuild the bottom end... minus a forged crank for about 1100 1200? something like that.... i'll get some tools n rebuild the motor over a winter or summer or w/e. anyways i just didnt want to build a badass NA motor cuz well, its done too much around here.. people do heads and cam and boom into the low 12's. i want to do something different and plan on doing this and finishing in a few years, so anyone who wants to toss idea's out go for it. just don't call me an idiot cuz i'll jay and silent bob u :lol:

sweet.... uhh... i figure i can build the bottom end... minus the forged crank for around 1100 1200 bucks... so i'm thinking for the turbo setup... all the piping and everything including the rebuild on the motor less than 3500 if thats possible... if not i'll rig it somehow

well.... two 50-60mm twins is already almost 2500 bucks . as for a single, depends on the size. 30r is around 1800 all the way up to a 42r being about 2400 Then u gotta add in piping, intercooler, fuel system upgrades.... and we haven't even touched the motor yet and your already looking at well over 3grand.

How much psi u plan on running, or estimated hp range? More than likely your drivetrain is probably gonna need upgraded a bit too... and thats big $$$$$

oh no doubt my drivetrain will need upgraded... looking to run low 11's so.... 500rwhp? look at spooledmotorsports.com n see if they have anything thats used i can make work, i was also wondering what compression i should make the motor... i'm thinking maybe 9:1 since its at 11:1 now

heh.. oh i know... i'll probably need something like 40# injectors... maybe a little more, i'll upgrade everything i need to upgrade just wanna get a ball park estimate on the turbo build itself n what i'll need

lower the compression, the more boost u can run per octane rating.

9:1 about 14lbs on 93, 8.5:1 about 18lbs 8:1 about 22psi ect ect. rough estimates

yeah.... 500rwhp ur def gonna need new axels (if ur gonna rip that apart u may as well do gears), probably a whole trans rebuild, new clutch and new driveshaft

that right there is like 2grand.... and its pretty much worthless to turbo that motor without atleast getting new heads or getting the old ones ported, new cam to match. so thats another 1000, or if u buy new heads, about 2000. (AFR heads are god) Also a bigger tb and intake

so to give u a fair estimate, if u wanna go the turbo route. Ur probably looking at atleast $6,000-7,000 for bottom end, ported head, new cam, intake, tb, new fuel system, and upgraded drivetrain, turbo and piping + a tune. Then u gotta go buy slicks :thumbsup:

Last thing u wanna do is half ass it and break something, then your out more money than u would have been just building it right the first time.

uncle owns a machine shop.... so i can port my own heads, my buddy knows these people in canfield that build 2 of his rear ends for mudding for less than 1 granda piece so i'll go to them for the rear end, as far as the transmission goes i dunno what i wanna do yet i may just get the viper transmission.... heh... and did i mention i work at summit.... at cost discount is nice so for the 58mm tb, (i know nothing about cam specs for turbo's) cam, valves and everything i can hopefully make a roller build over a solid build for cheap, its late i dunno if any of this makes sense i'm so tired lol. but i should be able to build it cheaper than that i'm hoping. if not oh well 5 years isnt too long is it? lol

cam works the same for turbod motors as non tubro, im just saying your going to want to upgrade your air-flow is all... and u seriously get stuff at cost? die in a fucking fire.

my car is currently sporting the t-56 viper trans :thumbsup: i <3 it

well since u got the hookup on the heads and rear end work u may be able to fudge it for around $5,000-5,500?

lol i have shitty luck... i'd just get really burned. i always say if i got hit by a bus i'd juts be paralyzed my whole life and not die. but we only get like 2 grand a year to spend money on at cost.... have u checked those little turbo's on that website out?

Parts list.

Low Compression Pistons/New rings 9 to 8.5 to 1
New bearings
Headstuds
Single 67mm turbo
Oil drain/feed lines (water of DBB)
Injectors
Fuel Pump (255 should work on pump)
Some type of EMS
Tial 44mm gate
Tial 50mm BOV
Your going to need a manifold, as well as a cross over pipe to feed into the manifold with the turbo from both banks.
IC with piping, t-bolt clams, couplers.
Then of course downpipe to exisiting exhaust.(granted you have one)

If you have never messed with this stuff before I suggest buying a kit.

Firstly there's quite a few stock cam-stock heads-stock manifold Lt1 cars into the 11's on a single.
The lt1 intake is actually an open plenum type design that although doesn't always have great velocity #'s, takes very well to boost. Couple the fact that you have an iron block, and we're good to go.

I would either recommend getting a 'kit' if your not the greatest welder/fabricator. There's been quite a few threads on LS1tech in the Lt1-lt4 forums regarding these, along with a few members with home-brewed setups. I also know a local kid who's fabbed his own twin setup with a hatted carb setup on an LT1, but since he's not done, I can't say how great it will be :P

The points I would hit first is the opti-spark. Not sure if I read over the year, or if it was mentioned, but if it's a pre 95 non vented car, I would def spend some $ there. The individual coil conversion would be benificial I bet in a turbo case just for a hotter spark. MSD sells cap/rotor kits, but I've heard too many bad things. Best stick to factory GM.

Do the clutch NOW. I wouldn't trust a stock f-body clutch at the levels you want. The t-56 in it will be just dandy. No need to spend another 4k for larger input shafts etc. It's very few and far between done on those, and I've seen stock trans guys go damn far. PM 'SVT THIS' on here, I'm sure he can elaborate on the factory t-56 further as he's been deep 11s on it or better by now.

10 bolt....yea, you'll prolly break that heh. Might last a little while, but at those levels I'd say 1 season should kill it.

As far as management, it's always good to spend more here. It's usually the diff between fast and safe or slow and blown up. I've seen FMU based cars go rediculously fast, but I've never been a fan. Larger injectors will be needed, so you'll need a tune anyhow. Depending on the year, and OBDI or OBDII, theres a few programs to choose from or be limited to. Safest to stay away from the mail order stuff. Names are escaping me for programs this early, other than like EFI Live etc.

I mean in all fairness if you're doing a GOOD heads/cam, you can run 11s on that alone. You've got cubes on your side unlike freakin 3-oh-poo's in my car. People swear by ported stockers, Lloyd Elliot porting services seem popular along with a matched camshaft. Don't waste time or effort on the LT4 stuff. It's not much better and is just a rasied runner intake. Clean up the stock intake and do a larger TB and you'll be fine.

I guess that's my $.02 worth for now. Your best bet is to read. LCA's, adjustable TQ arm and SFC's will also do wonders :thumbsup:

i know lots of ppl who are great welders and fabricators so i'll have no problem there. I know i need all kinds of upgrades but i wanted to start w/ the motor just to get the facts of what i need. lol i used to be in the same car club as SVT THIS. after takling to him he said it was only about 250 to get the machine work done on his motor so we may see a 383 stroker w/ 16 psi of boost somewhere down the line. I am going to start with the rear end of the car and work my way up to the motor just so i'm not a giddy little kid and snap my car in half. The transmission is an automatic 4L60E and i want to keep it Automatic. So i'll find a way to upgrade the internals on it and go from there. i'll probably geta 3200 stall converter. actually summit makes forged bottom end setups for around 1900 retail cost for a 383 stroker, this is a forged crank , connecting rods, and forged flat top pistons, along with all the bearings i need. So for 2 grand i may just wind up going 383 stroker and run it like that until i can get enough for the turbo then add the turbo setup to my already tough motor. I've read on other forums that the Optispark distributor will actually do a fine job, people are just skeptical of it because of how easily it can be damaged.

i'll probably start with a 383 stroker and add the turbo later on down the road since the motor will be able to handle it. so 2 grand for the engine roughly, 1200 for the rear end if i'm lucky, and 1800 or so for the trans so for 5 grand i can hopefully be around 11's

exactly what i'm doing with mine. Drive train is already built to hold the power i want down the road, i'm just building a 347 stroker with big comp pistons until i can afford to turbo it. Once i can do that, just swap to 8.5:1s and its good to go :thumbsup:

Far to expensive to be able to do it all at once

like tom said, u can probably get away with the stock head/intake... but upgrading them makes such a huge fucking difference! thats why i recommended just spending the money on the topend and make her rev :thumbsup:

U can put her into the 11's pre-turbo setup for a few thousand bucks

plannin on getting the heads ported, it'll rev...trust me it'll rev lol but i gotta start smart n upgrade suspension first then rear end, then trans then the motor.

It takes more of a spark to ignite the compressed, high octane mix.

u want colder plugs when running any type of boost.. whether its a turbo or a NOS shot... the optispark will hold up fine i'm not dropping 800 bucks on something that still uses half of the opti anyways

is there specific listing of what car/years this is built to fit? i have a feeling your still going to have to modify the kit to make it work
