I'd say this is where you and I differ.
This car was not built as just a 1/4 mile stunner. It was built for the standing mile. Something an auto transmission would not do well in at all, especially if it wanted to be competitive in the 1/4 as well without having to change its setup.
This car literally has no physical change from its standing mile world record to its 1/4 6 speed supra record. No easy task.
An auto would simply take the challenge out of a 7 second pass, since there have been a number of auto Supras to dip into the 7's. It seems as if the majority of the people in the world of drag racing prefer the redundant and easy way out: autos and larger displacement.
Function > Form.
